My distance run this week went a lot better than last week's, it wasn't a wonder run or anything, but it was kinda pleasant. (a.k.a. In a shady forrest with a slight breeze.) Unfortunately I was a little too ambitous with my last 10k loop, and I ended up walking the last stretch.

Well, I recently had one of my worst runs ever. I suppose that I could have anticipated some of the misfortune, but a lot of it was just bad timing/luck. Anyway, I had to go on my long run around noon on a hot day: yada, yada, yada, I got sunburned, dehydrated, partially injured, and locked out of the house. Although one cool thing did happen, I notice that there was a layer of white salt collecting on my clothes, and well, that just made my day.

Hmm, I don't think that I've ever seen the Razz-Sorbet or Tangerine flavors, but they sound interesting in any case. Speaking of different flavors, I don't think that I'm biased against coffee or anything, but the cappuccino flavor powerbars... It actually didn't taste that bad, it's just that the taste wouldn't go away...

As far as my training is going, I'm not sure if I'm meeting my goals. I tend to run fast mid distance on the treadmill, but fairly poor long distance outside. So, yeah... hopefully the marathon is going to be on a cool day and a level surface.

Laura: Did you ever end up biking down the C&O canal trail?

:P well, I'm still managing to get out for a run from time to time.... I blame the hot weather.

And yeah, those socks ROCK....... real running stores are soo much nicer than foot locker and other shoe stores.....

I like the Razz-Sorbet flavor of powerbar the best..... The tangerine one was just awful......

A couple days ago I went shoe shopping at a running store, not foot locker or finnish line, but a dedicated running store. Apparently there are only two in Indiana. It was a pretty good experience, they made a little video of me running on a treadmill and found out that I tend to over pronate. So who knows, maybe with my new shoes I won't have as much wear and tear on my body. I also came across a pair of those double-wall socks that you guys were talking about, they're not quite what I had pictured.

... Well, I'm still following my little training program. However I tend to run faster on the short days and slower on the long days than reconmended. The one real cool thing about running LONG distances is that I can now run shorter distances faster, the rub is that on short days we're supposed to go slower. (Some crazy talk about needing recovery time.)

Yeah, finding a clear lane in a pool can be tricky sometimes. It's not always kids or other swimmers either, once at my YMCA I had to watch out for scuba divers beneath me. I actually didn't mind that, it was interesting to see people beneath you when swimming. (Normally pool swimming can be dreadfully boring.) But I am kinda annoyed by treadmill time limits. Officially members can only sign up for at most half-hour blocks, which doesn't quite work when running long distance. So I ask whether it's ok for me to sign up on two treadmills and alternate every half-hour, and they said that I can... right... I can go on about YMCA oddities, but I digress.

I also finally tried some Power Gel (I found a bike store that carried it.) I haven't tried many flavors yet, I liked the lemon lime, but the chocalate was iffy. I do have some concerns on how they affect training though. I was under the impression that one of the points of long distance training was that your body learned to switch energy sources (from short term glucose to fat burning)? Anyway, I'm not sure if it's good to keep refilling on glucose. Well, that was my initial reaction anyway, I'm going to ask around a little.

Other running-type news: I really need to get new running shoes, oder eaters for my gym bag (Do these actually exist?), and a hair cut.

hmm... long time no post for me...... Colorado is about the same as ever...(meaning I'd rather be in Maryland)... on the other hand, I got a chance to do a few laps in the pool here at the hotel. Only about 15 minutes though, since it was a rather small pool, and I was sharing it with about 6 kids..... oh well.. such is life...

Laura, how did you feel when running? Did you get hurt or was it just a case of overtraining? In either case, you might want to switch to biking or swimming for a while til you feel better. If you're getting down, remember it's a gradual process. It's better to make slow progress than to injure yourself and quit. It might also help if you went running with someone. (Didn't you do that last year?) I recently started running with some people, and it makes the time pass so much quicker. (It turns out one of them is interested in neuro-science!) Plus we "push" each other's pace and it's always good to have someone pissed off when you don't show. :P I hope this helps, if not, I might have to get "creative" if you still need some extra incentive.
